My vote: a bit mad, providing him the visions needed to be a good story teller.
After struggling furiously not to just write this guy off as sci-fi comedy, I found the reptilian brain / moon matrix connection compelling on some levels. After all, Earth is a tiny and young place in the grand universe. How would an advanced civilization treat us? How do we treat chickens?
We treated our own contemporaneously evolved species horrendously as masters/slaves. How would we treat ourselves if we had an evolutionary gap of a few tens of thousand of years, a cosmic femtosecond? I think it boils down to resources.
We put chickens in cages so they’ll produce eggs and meat.
What resource would a civilization garner from our entrapment? Are there secret launches that are ferreting away gold? (Or more likely Uranium or some other exotic resource we may not be aware of yet). The data aspect doesn’t really compute as an advanced civilization would, almost by definition, be far superior at handling data.
And I doubt the advanced civilization would be much interested in us as entertainment.
So I’m mostly with Stephen Hawking… If or when the aliens come, it’ll be to gobble up the energy from our Sun.
