Police on Steroids (possibly 1 in 4)--rampant steroid drug abuse by police linked to 'roid rage, epidemic police brutality, and excessive use of force

Yet another man suffering from a diabetic medical emergency is attacked by police deputies. Apparently the man was unable to respond to their commands–greatly offending the deputies. The four Hamilton Ohio deputies taze him multiple times and brutally beat the man before a state trooper saves him and pulls them off. Steroid Rage

According to a recent report by AOL News, as many as 25 percent or more of police officers are regularly take steroid drugs, which has led to a rise in the number of assaults and other cases of “roid rage” occurring against citizens by those in law enforcement. (Source)

Lawrence Payne, a spokesman for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) recently told AOL News that steroid use among cops is a “big problem” and that “it’s something we shouldn’t ignore.” After all, numerous investigations have revealed an alarmingly high rate of use, including an investigation in New Jersey that pinned 248 cops and 53 firefighters with steroid use. Police departments are investigating a growing number of incidents involving uniformed police officers who are using steroids to build beefy, muscular physiques.

Police departments are concerned because it is illegal in the United States to possess steroids without a prescription. They are listed by the Drug Enforcement Agency as a Schedule III substance, like morphine, opium, barbiturates and other prescription drugs.

Anabolic steroids are synthetically produced variants of the naturally occurring male hormone testosterone. . . The full name for this class of drugs is androgenic (promoting masculine characteristics) anabolic (tissue building) steroids (the class of drugs). . . Steroids are purported to increase lean body mass, strength and aggressiveness. . . POSSIBLE PSYCHOLOGICAL DISTURBANCES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:

• Mood swings (including manic-like symptoms leading to violence);
• Impaired judgment (stemming from feelings of invincibility);
• Depression;
• Nervousness;
• Extreme irritability;
• Delusions;

Steroid Rage

A 2006 study of two pairs of identical twins, in which one twin used anabolic steroids and the other did not, found that in both cases the steroid-using twin exhibited high levels of aggressiveness, hostility, anxiety and paranoid ideation not found in the “control” twin.^[72] (Source)

There is a scientific explanation for the violent behavior exhibited by steroid abusers, says Linn Goldberg, a professor of medicine at Oregon Health & Science University and an expert on steroid abuse.

“Your dopamine receptors are changed,” he said, referring to the chemical in the brain that transmits nerve signals. “They help guard against a lack of impulse control.”

Steroid abusers lack the same level of control that non-users have. “They have uncontrolled aggressive feelings. Their judgment is impaired,” Goldberg said. (Source)

According to an article that appeared in the FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin in 1991: “Anabolic steroid abuse by police officers is a serious problem that merits greater awareness by departments across the country.” . . . CBS-TV program “60 Minutes” had already made that point on November 5, 1989. “Beefing Up the Force” presented interviews with three officers whose use of steroids had apparently caused the hyper-aggressiveness that had gotten them into serious trouble.
